I have been having issues recently... It sort of relates to the new Sanaa Lathan movie that is coming out, with her and the White man... I actually hadn't seen any of the previews before I saw her kind of on the defensive about how Black dudes need to get over the concept of Black women messing with White men... But then it hit me... Why? I mean there is clearly a double standard into how the entire things is protrayed...
Let's look at it how interracial relationships are portrayed in the media. Of course there is the old classic Othello, Black man White Woman, we know how that turns out... Then there is Monsters Ball White Man, black Woman, though the movie is a bit silly, supposedly a reaffirming tale of love. On the other hand jungle fever, Black Man White Woman, the relationship damn near tears everyones life apart... Guess Who, Black woman, White Man, the family's get over their problems and supports true love...
now this is not scientific, but it all seems to go back to the same old discussions, for some reason Black Men are supposed to be perfectly fine with Black Women dating White Men, because of numbers disparities and what not, however it is perfectly acceptable for Black Women to hate on a Black Man in an interracial relationship... Hell it is even more permissible in society, as you may have Bill Clinton's old Cabinent member (I forget his name), Robert Deniro, Bill Maher, Roger Ebert, and various other White Men with money or status dating a Black Woman, where you can nver find one example of a rich or famous white woman who has married a Black Man, (With the possible exception of Nicole Kidmans unsubstantiated near engagements to Lenny Kravitz and Q-Tip)
Now theoretically I am not sure how much I care about Black women dating White men... I know I have certain friends (you know who you are) whom if I see you with a white man I am sending hella hate your way, but others where I won't mind as much. I guess I am jsut most annoyed by the almost assaultive full court press that I receive sometime about my need to accept a woman with a White man (and usually I mean a Wack ass Lame white man... Can u at least find a cool one? or even a rich one?) Yet, simultaneously get consistently threatened about selling out my sisters and bringing a white girl home...
I fully acknowledge that I am not being the most progressive on this subject, but hey I never said I wasn't slightly a hypocrit... I will respect everyones right to go interracial even if I most likely disagree, however there are exceptions to every rule depending on the people and the situations but it general I can't imagine how the folks relate, at least enough for me...
